Program Overview

The Women's Leadership Training Institute (WLTI) was inaugurated at Washington University in 1985. WLTI was developed to promote a more equitable environment for student leaders across gender lines, but the years have shown that the program achieves much more than this. By empowering women to be active and reflective participants in their college experience, WLTI plays a part in developing strong women leaders on campus, in the workforce and in their future communities.

WLTI will take on a new form this year, including an application process, monthly workshops, and opportunities for community building, skill building, and campus and community outreach. The target audience for WLTI includes sophomores, juniors, and seniors, but freshmen are encouraged to meet with Kristen Goehausen, WLTI Coordinator, if they are strongly interested in applying. This year's programs might include workshops on healthy relationships, communication, body image, multicultural women, feminism, dealing with stress, negotiating a career and family life, managing your finances, and female sexuality. Additional opportunities include a book club, plays, musical performances, art exhibits, lectures, movies, and dining experiences. This year's participants will be part of the first cohort of WLTI's new format and will be encouraged to participate in a Mentorship Program during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Goals for WLTI:

  • Participate in an engaging year-long experience that provides leadership skill-building workshops, exposure to established women leaders, and self-reflection
  • Create a community of diverse women undergraduate students committed to becoming women leaders on campus and in the community
  • Develop leadership and life skills that prepare women undergraduates for the transition from college to the workforce/graduate school and their future communities
  • Build communication skills through public speaking and interpersonal communication workshops and opportunities for dialogue
  • Participate in networking opportunities that will enable women to build relationships and learn from other women's experiences
  • Provide opportunities for community outreach and involvement
  • Empower women to be active and reflective participants in their college experience who develop a sense of self and identity
